With the death of the GSW and AllTrack, let's remember that you can still buy a manual Impreza hatch for under $19,000.

Sure, it’s a hatch and not a wagon. Sure, it’s naturally aspirated and isn’t much more powerful than a base Corolla. But, it has symmetrical AWD instead of the Haldex AWD system .

The interior does not have the “near-premium” feel of the VAGCOM products — but if you like black and cloth: boy oh boy will you like a base-model Subaru. I would rate the cargo area as “not so bad.” A medium-sized doggo has plenty of room. I would rate the 2.0i as... Slow.

The manual is available on the Sport package as well (which gives you skirts and wheels), but not the Premium nor the Limited packages.

Still, if you need to get from A to B and live with actual winters, there are worse ways to get around.

They’re a whole lot better looking than Corolla you mentioned, especially in the ‘sport’ trim. Too bad the 2.5RS isn’t a thing anymore or I’d honestly consider one. Unfortunately the N /A 2.0 is genuinely slow.

This (and the Crosstrek) needs a turbo. “Let’s make an AWD adventure mobile that is even slower when you drive it on high-altitude adventures!”

CrossWRX would be huge.

A 5-speed manual in 2019, though? Only partial credit for Subaru.

I think of the Impreza as a wagon.

It also satisfies Jason’s rules:  What Makes A Wagon A Wagon?

Interesting parameters, though personally I still feel it needs a D-pillar to be a wagon (which the Impreza may satisfy)

I’m not sure you need a d-pillar, but I will note that Torch messed up the Civic hatch example by counting the back seats as part of the cargo area, which is clearly wrong.

The one thing that the GSW 4Motion and Alltrack have over the Impreza is a moderately sporting auto transmission. However, the second hand market is still pretty limited with the 4Motion and alltrack.

After dealing with my 2018 Outback for a year, no thanks on newer Subarus. Garbage infotainment that would freeze to where I couldn’t even adjust the volume or even turn it off. Even pulling over and shutting the car off wouldn’t fix it. Damn thing needed to sit for 20min to reset. Dealer was worthless and couldn’t/wouldn’t fix it. Combine that with the constant beeping of various safety systems, squeaking driver seat, and garbage CVT and I went running back to VW.

When your  product makes me go to VW to get reliability, you screwed up, Subaru. My 2012 Outback was great, new 2018 not so much.
